-----

Mary Jane Seacole (1805-1881) British-Jamaican business woman and nurse who set up the "British Hotel" behind the lines during the Crimean War.Her work in Crimea was overshadowed by Florence Nightingale's for many years.

She has been better remembered in the Caribbean, where significant buildings were named after her in the 1950s and she was posthumously awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991. By the 21st century Seacole had become a much more prominent figure in the UK and she was voted into first place in an online poll of 100 Great Black Britons in 2004.
